Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death – Simple Home Remedies To Try

The latest Xbox 360’s have a new motherboard and a new and “improved” graphics chip that should emit less heat. Whether this new generation of Xboxes has eliminated the red ring of death problem remains to be seen. Only time and a good deal of use under a variety of conditions will tell. Meanwhile, for the rest of us stuck with older Xboxes, the red ring of death and other heat related problems are still a fact of life.

This article will discuss a few troubleshooting tips for you to try out before considering refurbishment or repair.

1.) I know this one sounds obvious, but it’s here for the sake of being complete: Restart the console.

2.) If this doesn’t help, then the problem may be due to a loose cable or cord. First, disconnect all power cords and cables that can be removed from the Xbox. Disconnect the power cord from the wall.

All cables and cords should now be reattached to the console. Plug the power cord back into the wall and turn the console back on.

3.) If the above tip didn’t work, turn off the Xbox, unplug the power cord, and detach the hard drive. Plug in the power cable and turn on the console. If you don’t see any red lights, power down the console and remove the power cord. Now put the hard drive back in, plug the power cord back in, and power up your console.

4.) The contacts of the power cable have been known to melt. This has happened to Xboxes that were played over extreme lengths of time (up to 12 continuous hours). In many of these cases, the console had an intercooler attached.

Check the contacts for heat damage. Sometimes the Xbox will still function when the power cord is elevated. But the red ring of death error lights turn on when you let the power cord droop back down. Replace the power cord if you have melted power cord contacts.

5.) If your problem is overheating, then give your Xbox an occasional rest so that it can cool off. Make sure that the cooling vents are obstruction free and operate your Xbox in a well ventilated space. Be careful that there are no heat sources in the vicinity.

Use some air to blow out dust buildup that you find inside the console. Put a fan next to your Xbox to cool it off. Remember that the power brick has to stay cool, so don’t set it down on anything soft such as a shag carpet.

It too should be in an open area with ventilation. The power brick can also be hung from its cord using a hook.

This article dealt with various measures for coping with the ring of death that doesn’t involve repair. If your problems were still not solved, getting your machine repaired or replaced is your next option. Don’t forget that your warranty is void if you open your console.
