Soup for One: An occasionally triumphing although choppy presentation of lone New Yorker Rubinek looking for his fantasy girl. Cast includes Saul Rubinek, Marcia Strassman, Gerrit Graham, Teddy Pendergrass, Richard Libertini, Andrea Martin, and Lewis J. Stadlen. (87 minutes, 1982)

Repulsion: Polanski’s first English-language film is a phenomenal mental shocker portraying the psychological deterioration of a sexually repressed gal left alone in her sibling’s condo for few nights. The film hasn’t lost one bit of its impact. It can leave you anxious for many nights after watching it. Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Ian Hendry, John Fraser, Patrick Wymark, Yvonne Fumeaux, and James Villiers. (105 minutes, 1965)

Rambo: Much better than part II, this one continues to be firmly footed in the genre of mindless action films, as our brawny idol goes behind Russian battle lines in Afghanistan to save his buddy from a prison fortress. You will see lots of eruptions to keep the action going and some funny stuff thrown in too. Cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna, Marc de Jonge, Kurtwood Smith, Spiros Focas, and Sasson Gabai. (101 minutes, 1988)

Daniel Boone: An okay action venture detailing a chapter in the life of the legendary pioneer and his leading of some settlers west from North Carolina into Kentucky. O’Brien is well cast in the title role Cast includes George O’Brien, Heather Angel, John Carradine, Ralph Forbes, and Clarence Muse. (75 minutes, 1936)

Thieves like Us: 3 black sheep flee from jail in 1930s south and go on a binge. The youngest (Carradine) falls in love with an easy, ignorant gal (Duvall). In spite of recognizable trappings, Altman digs deeply into period environment and hefty characterizations. This film gets better every time you watch it. Cast includes Keith Carradine, Shelley Duvall, John Schuck, Bert Remsen, Louise Fletcher, Ann Latham, and Tom Skerritt. (123 minutes, 1987)

Down in the Delta: With her life a mess and essentially no desire to work, lone mother Woodard boards the bus with her 2 kids to spend the summer in the Mississippi Delta, living with family members and working in their restaurant. Episodic drama recoups from awkward start to better points for utter likability. Woodard beams and Freeman gives one of the best acting jobs of his career. Cast includes Alfre Woodard, Al Freeman, Jr., Wesley Snipes, Mary Alice, Esther Rolle, and Loretta Devine. (111 minutes, 1998)

The General: Boorman inscribed this personality research of a true story about a Dublin felon known as the General, who avoided being captured for years. Following his own skewed set of morals, he masterminds robberies both big and small, refuses to trust anyone, cherishes 2 ladies simultaneously, and matches brains with a tough nosed cop (Voight) who is out to catch him. Cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Jon Voight, Adrian Dunbar, Sean McGinley, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Angeline Ball, and Eamonn Owens. (124 minutes, 1998)

A Guy Named Joe: Excellent cast flounders in this lazy fantasy film in reference to WW2 guide Tracy returning from the heavens to give youthful serviceman Johnson a hand in his romance with Tracy’s former lady friend Dunne. Cast includes Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, James Gleason, Lionel Barrymore, Barry Nelson, Esther Williams, and Don Defoe. (120 minutes, 1943)

The Mystery of Edwin Drood: A seemingly honorable English choirmaster (Pours) is essentially accountable for a terrible murder. This is an excellent Hollywood adaptation of Charles Dickens’ incomplete novel, which inspired a Broadway musical in the 1985. Cast includes Claude Pours, Douglass Montgomery, E. E. Clive, and Valerie Hobson. (87 minutes, 1935)
